5 Ways to Enjoy Late Summer in Los Barriles

September 14th, 2018

Summer is turning to fall and it’s the quietest time of year in the East Cape. With warmer weather and extra humidity in the air, many folks take a trip to a cooler climate for a break. Locals know there are still ways to make the most of the beauty and magic of Baja, even in the warmest months.

  • Embrace the rain. September and October bring afternoon rain and the occasional big storm. Locals call these storms “chubascos”. They blow in fast and heavy but leave the air fresh and cooler.
  • Sink your teeth into a sweet delicious mango. Perfectly ripe, sweet and picked from local Santiago orchards, the “Kent” variety is in season and plentiful this time of year.
  • Take a dip. The Sea is Cortez is warm, calm and wonderful for swimming and snorkeling. Early mornings and sunset offer the best conditions and some relief from the sun.
  • Take the plunge. The Wet Fun Parque Acuatico in Caduaño is a hidden gem just 40 minutes from Los Barriles. Beautiful, lush manicured gardens, and numerous pools, water slides and a toboggan give you multiple ways to cool off. The snack bar serves ice cold beer and food for a very reasonable price.
  • Have a drink! Of course, you can sip on a margarita or beer. But there are non-alcoholic thirst quenchers like jamaica and limonada that naturally restore your electrolyte balance in the heat. Jamaica (which is not pronounced like the island nation, but rather “hah-MY-cah”) is a drink made from hibiscus leaves, sugar and sometimes a bit of ginger. Limonada is a simple mix of lime juice and sugar, made with either flat or sparkling water. Both are common at restaurants, so drink up!
